Paint Watercolour With Clarity and Confidence

Transform your artistic nerves into calm, creative certainty.

What’s Included in the Course

Every lesson has been carefully designed to build your skills one step at a time — so that by the end, you’ll not only understand how to paint in watercolour, but why your paintings work.
You’ll have lifetime access to all lessons, with the ability to pause, rewind, and revisit at your own pace — plus downloadable PDF teaching resources for every module, guiding you as you paint alongside me.
Here’s what you’ll learn:

Lesson 1 – Understanding Colour Mixing, Tone and Value

We’ll start with the heart of every great painting — colour.
You’ll discover how to mix confidently, control tone, the moisture level of paper, and understand value so your paintings feel balanced and alive.
The downloadable guides make it easy to follow along and master these foundations, giving you instant clarity when choosing colours in future paintings.

Lesson 2 – Painting Different Types of Skies

Learn to create beautiful skies that set the mood of your landscape — from soft, peaceful skies to dramatic moody storms. You’ll gain the confidence to let colours flow naturally, using water and timing to your advantage. The PDF resources help you practise sky washes step-by-step until they feel effortless.

Lesson 3 – Painting Trees in Different Seasons

We’ll explore how to capture the character of trees through all four seasons — lush greens, autumn tones, bare winter branches, and more.
You’ll learn how brushwork and colour choices create believable textures and light.
The accompanying PDFs include seasonal colour palettes and exercises to strengthen your observation skills.

Lesson 4 – Painting Two Simple Landscapes

Now that you’ve built some confidence, it’s time to bring everything together in two full landscape paintings.
I’ll guide you step by step through composition, layering, and achieving harmony across your scene.
Your downloadable resources will reinforce each stage so you always know what comes next.

Lesson 5 – Tonal Sketching and Using Colour Perspective to Create Depth

You’ll discover how to use tonal sketching and colour perspective to give your paintings a real sense of depth and distance. These principles are what separate a “flat” painting from one that truly draws the viewer in. Your PDFs include tonal exercises and colour charts to help you see depth with clarity.

Lesson 6 – Painting, Understanding and Observing Water Reflections

Reflections can seem daunting — but after this lesson, you’ll see how simple and enjoyable they really are.
You’ll learn how to observe still and moving water, and how to mirror colours, shapes, and tones naturally.
The printable guides will walk you through reflection techniques that you can apply in any future landscape.

Lesson 7 – Painting Buildings within Landscapes

This lesson brings a new challenge: structure and precision.
You’ll learn how to include cottages, barns, and other buildings in your landscapes without losing looseness or flow.
The downloadable PDFs include perspective diagrams and step-by-step relative scale line drawings to help you succeed easily.

Lesson 8 – Painting Final Landscapes

Everything you’ve learned comes together here in your final paintings.
You’ll combine skies, trees, reflections, and composition into complete, confident works of art.
This is where you’ll see your transformation most clearly — as you realise just how far your skills have come.

The Desired Outcome

You might not believe it yet, but you already have what it takes to paint beautifully in watercolour.

Because watercolour isn’t about natural talent or luck.
It’s about understanding — knowing what’s happening on your paper, and why.

Most beginners feel nervous to start because watercolour seems unpredictable.
Colours run, paper buckles, and it can feel like it’s all going wrong before it’s even begun.

But once you understand how water, pigment, and timing work together, everything changes.
You stop guessing. You start seeing.
And with that, your confidence begins to build.

You’ll notice your brushstrokes become calmer.
You’ll know exactly which colours to mix, and how to control tone and depth.
And before long, you’ll find yourself painting pieces you’re genuinely proud of.

This course isn’t just about learning a technique.
It’s about transforming how you feel every time you sit down to paint.

You’ll go from nervous and uncertain to relaxed, confident, and excited — because you’ll finally understand what to do, and why it works.

By the end, you’ll be painting watercolour landscapes with clarity and ease, knowing exactly how to bring your ideas to life — again and again.

That’s the true outcome of this course.
Not just better paintings, but a lasting confidence that stays with you every time you pick up your brush.

I’m a complete beginner — is this course right for me?

We’ll start with the heart of every great painting — colour.
You’ll discover how to mix confidently, control tone, the moisture level of paper, and understand value so your paintings feel balanced and alive.
The downloadable guides make it easy to follow along and master these foundations, giving you instant clarity when choosing colours in future paintings.

You’ll have lifetime access to every lesson and downloadable resource. You can pause, rewind, and revisit the videos as often as you like — at your own pace, on your own schedule.

Inside the course, I’ll show you exactly what I use in each lesson — from brushes and paints to paper and palette. And for the first 50 students, I’ll send a free materials package with everything I use in the videos, so you can paint right alongside me from day one.

Free tutorials are great for inspiration — but they rarely give you a clear, structured path to progress. This course takes you on a complete journey from beginner to confident painter, with clear explanations, demonstrations, and printable guides to make sure everything finally makes sense.

You can go entirely at your own pace. Some people complete it in a few weeks, while others take several months — rewatching lessons and practising in between. The key is steady progress, not rushing through.

You won’t be left on your own. If you ever get stuck, have a question, or want to share your progress, you can email me directly. I love seeing what my students are creating, and I’ll happily offer feedback or guidance to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

Yes — that’s exactly what this course is designed for. You’ll not only complete 11 full paintings, but also understand the “why” behind what makes them work. That clarity is what gives you confidence, and it stays with you long after the course ends.

I enrolled on this course as a beginner. I have done some watercolour painting in the past with Richard but revisiting this in depth is exciting as I feel it will help build my confidence and I’m hoping to develop some new techniques and skills in watercolour.
I’ve just completed the ‘ Colour Mixing’ which was the first lesson on this new course. It’s true, most of us just think it’s the paintbrush and paints that do all the work. Just learned something very important in the first lesson that it’s the moisture levels on the paper that is most important and everything evolves around this. Watercolour wants to paint itself! I’m really looking forward to progressing through this course and feel excited what the next lesson will be. Thank you Richard this is so enlightening.

Student Testimonials

The transformations you’ll see below come from real students who began exactly where you are now — nervous, unsure, and often doubting if they could ever paint something they’d be proud of.

Through this same step-by-step approach, they found clarity, confidence, and joy in their painting — creating beautiful results that speak for themselves.

“I started watercolour painting a few years ago, in my late fifties, after never having shown any aptitude or interest really in art. I had an injury and a lot of free time, and saw my brother in law painting and just thought I would like to challenge myself to give it a go. I read a lot of books on watercolour and watched many hours of youtube videos. Eventually I decided that I needed in person classes so that I could see up close how the techniques work, and be part of a group learning process. After trying one class with someone who was undoubtedly a very good painter, but not such an effective teacher, I found Richard’s classes, after doing a few searches and checking reviews.
It was quite a way to travel for me but from the first lesson I liked Richard’s style of painting and his style of teaching. There were detailed lesson plans, paint and paper was provided for you ready to go, and it was nice to learn in the studio surrounded by lovely paintings which inspired you as to what might be possible…
