In-Person Beginners Six-Week Watercolour Course

Categories In Person

Discover the joy of watercolour painting — from your first brushstroke to your finished landscape.

Join me, Richard Burton, for a relaxed and inspiring six-week in-person course designed especially for beginners. Whether you’re completely new to watercolour or returning after some time away, this course will help you build confidence, understand the fundamentals, and create beautiful landscape paintings filled with light, mood, and atmosphere.

Each week, you’ll be guided step-by-step through new skills and techniques — and by the end, you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come.

What You’ll Learn

Over the six weeks, I’ll take you through a structured journey designed to give you a solid foundation in watercolour painting. You’ll learn how to:

  • Mix and control washes to create depth and softness
  • Understand colour theory and tonal values
  • Develop strong compositions for your paintings
  • Capture light, shadow, and atmosphere
  • Use different brush techniques to create texture and movement

Each lesson builds upon the last, so you’ll gradually gain both technical ability and creative confidence — without ever feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

What to Expect

Every week, I’ll demonstrate techniques live, explain my process clearly, and then guide you as you paint your own version step-by-step. I’ll be right there to answer questions, give feedback, and help you overcome any challenges along the way.

You’ll also receive lesson notes that you can read through as you paint along with me — and I’ll email them to you after each class so you can revisit what you’ve learned in your own time. This way, you’ll never forget key steps or techniques, and you can keep practising confidently between sessions.

You’ll have plenty of time to practise, ask for help, and enjoy the process in a friendly, supportive environment.

And don’t worry about bringing anything — I provide all the materials you’ll need, including the same paints, brushes, and paper that I use myself. All you need to do is turn up, relax, and enjoy painting.

Why You’ll Love This Course

My goal is to make watercolour painting clear, enjoyable, and achievable for everyone. You won’t just learn how to paint — I’ll show you why each stage matters, so you can understand what’s really happening with the paint and water.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a collection of beautiful paintings, a clear understanding of the techniques behind them, and the confidence to keep painting at home.

Do I need any previous painting experience?

Not at all. This course is designed for complete beginners, and I’ll guide you through each step so you feel confident, even if you’ve never painted before.

Yes — I provide everything you’ll need, including brushes, paper, paints, and palette. It’s the exact same setup I use when painting, so you can follow along easily.

You’re welcome to if you prefer, but everything is already supplied. All the materials I provide have been chosen carefully to give you the best results.

Don’t worry — if you miss a class, I’ll help you catch up at the next session so you stay on track with the group.

I like to keep class sizes small so that everyone receives plenty of personal guidance and feedback each week.

Absolutely. I’ll offer personal feedback and guidance during each session to help you develop your skills and grow in confidence.

Student Testimonials

The transformations you’ll see below come from real students who began exactly where you are now — nervous, unsure, and often doubting if they could ever paint something they’d be proud of.

Through this same step-by-step approach, they found clarity, confidence, and joy in their painting — creating beautiful results that speak for themselves.

“I started watercolour painting a few years ago, in my late fifties, after never having shown any aptitude or interest really in art. I had an injury and a lot of free time, and saw my brother in law painting and just thought I would like to challenge myself to give it a go. I read a lot of books on watercolour and watched many hours of youtube videos. Eventually I decided that I needed in person classes so that I could see up close how the techniques work, and be part of a group learning process. After trying one class with someone who was undoubtedly a very good painter, but not such an effective teacher, I found Richard’s classes, after doing a few searches and checking reviews.
It was quite a way to travel for me but from the first lesson I liked Richard’s style of painting and his style of teaching. There were detailed lesson plans, paint and paper was provided for you ready to go, and it was nice to learn in the studio surrounded by lovely paintings which inspired you as to what might be possible…

Our Mission

Why We’re Here, and What Our Mission Is

We’re here to help people discover the joy and excitement that comes from painting in watercolour. Our mission is simple — to take away the fear, confusion, and frustration that stops so many from getting started. We believe everyone has creativity within them — it just needs the right guidance and encouragement to grow.

We Exist to Help Others Do and Achieve the Same

Over the years, I’ve watched hundreds of students transform from hesitant beginners into confident, capable painters. That journey never gets old — it’s why we do what we do. We exist to make that same transformation possible for anyone who’s ever dreamed of painting but didn’t know where to begin.

Whether You’re New or Experienced, We Can Help

If you’re new to watercolour, we’ll show you exactly where to start — step by step, without overwhelm. If you’ve painted before and are returning to watercolour, we’ll help you rebuild your confidence and refine your technique. Wherever you are in your creative journey, we’ll meet you there and guide you forward.
